Request for donations for Sudanese refugees

Some new arrivals to Canada are in need of bicycles and equipment. Thanks to an earlier donation the two little girls (ages 6 and 8) now have bikes but still need helmets and bike locks. One of the adults, who is six feet tall, is also looking for a bike, and one who is five foot nine inches could really use an e-bike. The group who sponsored them realize an e-bike is a big ask, but we felt it was worth spreading the word.

June Outreach Recipient: Urban Spirit Foundation

Each month, we raise funds for a registered charity whose mission is in line with our values. We call this “Outreach”.

During June, we raised $836 for Urban Spirit Foundation, a charitable organization that exists to further the success and self reliance of Urban Indigenous people in the Metro Vancouver Region.

USF was created by the founders of ACCESS a non profit organization formed in 1999 through the collaboration of six Indigenous community organizations and funded by Human Resources Development Canada to provide education and employment training for the urban Indigenous living in the region. The Foundation works to grow philanthropic resources to provide education and employment training opportunities, secondary and post-secondary scholarships and bursaries, and community based programs and projects that move people from poverty to self sufficiency.

What Environmental Action Events Would You Like To See?

Everyone is invited to events organized by our Environmental Action Team.  We'd like to host events that more people are interested in attending.

We've brainstormed a few ideas — a book club (there a number of great new books) or speaker series (who would you want to hear from?) — but we welcome your input!

Invitation to the Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir concert - May 29th

You may recall that the Welsh Men’s Choir performed at one of our services earlier this year. Now’s your chance to hear them in concert — directed by our very own Alison Nixon (NSU Music Director).

You’re invited to the Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir concert at Highlands United Church (3255 Edgemont Blvd, North Vancouver) on Friday May 29th at 7pm. Tickets available at the door.

All are welcome at our June 17th Board Feedback event

NSU's first board meeting of the new year is Wednesday, June 17th. We are hosting a community forum as an opportunity for feedback and "blue sky thinking".

This is a great opportunity to meet the new board, share your thoughts on what is working, what could be changed and what might be fun to try!

Light refreshments will be served at 4:30.  The open forum will start at 5:00, prior to the formal board meeting at 6:30.  Please come and enjoy connecting with your friends and providing your input.

Elevator Installation Has Begun!

Our elevator installation project has begun, and will eventually connect the Sanctuary to the Fireside Room. We’ll show updates here as the project progresses.

No Heat: Layers Recommended

Hi All,

Construction of the elevator has begun!

One of the first things that is needed is for the heating pipes to be re-routed both upstairs and down. Mark (the contractor) has had to shut off the heat in order to cut the pipes and cap them. They will then be rerouted by a plumber (permit required) and then inspected by West Van.

We could be without heat for a few weeks but fortunately the weather is looking good. We recommend dressing in layers that you can put on or take off, as needed, to stay comfortable.
